Your stories are so familiar, sadly. Often, companies ignore their customers until someone decides to terminate the service. Then, everyone starts “caring” and invent ways to keep charging them. In the world of Word of Mouth on steroids (aka social media), this is a losing tactic for sure. Even if people stop using your service, they can recommend it to others or hold a grudge for 20 years.
