Thank you so much for the… “In the past, I’ve charged X for this kind of work. It that within your budget?”

I just had a new client ask about doing case studies and your phrase is super helpful!

Exactly, Amber! I was talking about this on an AWAI call today. Instead of the question being, “how much do you charge,” it’s more, “what’s the anticipated ROI?” Who cares if content costs $500 a page if it drives 50K+ worth of business! :)

Thanks for your note!

I enter the field with more capacity than the average person begins with. I was previously trained to write sales copy by personality type. Literally learning the language reach uses to make their buying decisions. I can isolate the four languages, as well as weave them together, speaking to all four simultaneously, while other copywriters will tend to their own type.

Add to that, I’ve taken training in NLP Copywriting. I know how to speak to the subconscious mind. My customer avatar development is WAY deeper than anything that will come of standard copywriting training.

I begin my first projects with advanced skills.

What is the revenue potential for the client if I land them high conversions? What’s the low end profit anticipated from average results?

If I write them into six figure profits while they sleep, that’s worth WAY more than the numbers I’ve seen mentioned here.

Interesting stuff to think about.

Hello!

I really appreciate your perspective and feel your pain (I may even write a blog post about this — so thank you for your idea!)

It’s not that people aren’t willing to reveal actual numbers. It’s because the situations are all so different. And, to a certain extent, we’re all spitballing when it comes to pricing (even if people don’t want to admit it!). We charge as much as our market will bear. If you are a highly skilled email writer who can pull results, you may be able to make 10K or more from an email series. But not if your target market is small businesses.

However, at a bare minimum, you should always make your expenses plus extra. A lot of writers don’t even do this, and it’s sad. :/

You may want to check out Derek Halpern’s stuff. He talks about pricing and moving prospects towards the “yes” line. It’s not specific to freelance writers, but he does touch upon how to sell value…and how that influences pricing.

Thanks!
:)

I can take all that advice, but the only actual number that gives me a jumping off point is “Don’t take less than $50,” which I hear a lot. But if I’ve been copywriting for a year, this doesn’t really help. Since no one is willing to reveal actual numbers, I can’t know if bumping that to $100 an hour is a good jump, or is still peanuts in comparison to what most professionals would charge. Every “How much to charge for freelance copywriting” article skirts around this, and leaves us with lots of great advice, and no real answers.
