I’m trying to get some guest blogs going here soon. I will definitely be referring back to this entry along the way. Thanks for sharing!

Why not rework this post in a few months’ time, calling it instead ‘5 questions you should ask yourself before pitching a guest post’?

I have run many blogs in the past, and I find that “free” content often comes with its own price. Rather than accept guest bloggers at random, I personally made a choice of checking out writers’ online presence first and seeing what other work they have done. If the voice fits, a guest post is a good thing, but if not, I pass. I do NOT agree that mediocre content is better than no content.

I’m not the best self-promoter either. Working on it!!

Hi, Stephen! Yup, it happens all the time – I think this happens because:

(1) editors don’t have any “back up” content, so they have to run whatever they get. And…
(2) the content is free, so they figure – hey, this may suck. But at least we didn’t pay for it…

Thanks for your comment and the kudos! :)

I’ve had similar concerns with the format. Unless the person writing the guest post is thorough, credible, etc. you’ll be spending more time going behind there work to ensure that it is fault-free. Which, honestly, I don’t understand why someone would post something they haven’t checked for these credibility-busting errors. But like you said, it happens ALL THE TIME.
