We have all had this experience and it helps to remember these tips. Thanks for taking the time to reflect on this and share some good takeaways.

Thanks, Adam – and don’t beat yourself up. We’ve all had conversations with prospects where we’ve thought, “Doh. Wish I wouldn’t have said that.” The stuff that makes uscringe is like one big learning experience. :)

When sending an email to follow-up on a proposal on which you have not any word for a while, don’t ask for feedback on why you might not have gotten it.

I did this and then within an hour read this article/post and realized how defeatist it read.

You are very welcome. It’s easy to feel like it’s “just you” who is losing gigs – or there’s something wrong with you personally when it happens. It is what it is – and there’s always a better opportunity around the corner. :)

Hehe, VERY true Amy. I have “lost” some clients only to realize – wow – it really wouldn’t have been a good fit. At all. Definitely a blessing! :)

“If you need to, take time away from the computer and do something physical (and no, that doesn’t mean punching your prospect – it means taking a walk.)”

Walking is good and if you run, that’s even better. If you really want to get out your frustration in these moments, invest in a punching bag and some boxing gloves. Let’s not lie – it feels good to hit things sometimes. ;-)

I think these tips are important for us to remember – especially as freelancers or solopreneurs. It can be difficult to not take things personally.

It IS important to learn from the leads that didn’t turn into clients. But also remember, sometimes NOT getting a client can be a huge blessing in disguise!

Your advice is obviously rooted in your years’ of experience, and it is most comforting to know that we all go through this. Taking the knocks and learning from them is part of the process, and guess what? You’re all the more savvy and successful because of it!
